In case you don’t already know, the new computer-animated movie, Sausage Party, is definitely not for kids. In fact, it almost didn’t make the cut for an ‘R’ rating in the theaters. After years of development, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s raunchy comedy had to make some big changes just to slide past the censors. Check out the video below to see Seth talking to Howard Stern.
A bit too much
So what had to be cut? Some big changes included cutting a scene where Nick Kroll’s villain, Douche,
Fingering [a] rat’s, um… well… he was fingering the rat’s butthole.
Then he broke the cardinal rule and stuck the finger in Kareem Abdul Lavash’s mouth, voiced by David Krumholtz. After test screening, the Lavash character garnered such poor reception Goldberg said they cut the character. The character hit so awkwardly that Goldberg said,
We achieved a life goal: We made Sacha Baron Cohen uncomfortable. It was the best.
Awkward moments
With the twisted sense of humor that makes Seth and the crew infamous across the world, the only thing that could make a bad joke out of this food farce actually happened. Some inattentive idiots at a theater included the preview for Sausage Party in the roster played before Finding Dory.
Even the preview quickly shows that this film goes to places both dark and disturbing. With swearing, dismemberment, and sex, parents caused an uproar. Seth agreed that the accident was unfortunate, but we are all going to hell for laughing about it.
Sausage Party: In-food-grante delicto
Even after editing, the MPAA scarlet-lettered Seth’s boundary-busting comedy with an NC-17 rating. To get down to ‘R’ rating in order to survive the box-office, Seth told Howard Stern it took a ‘final trim’.
There is a pita bread and you see his ballsack in the end orgy and it had hair on it. And they asked we remove the hair from the pita bread’s ballsack… So we digitally shaved the pita bread’s ballsack and removed the hair from it.
Frankly, I don’t appreciate body hair in my food, either. But food coming together for some ‘in-food-grante delicto’? Sure, why not go there.
