Green Is Gold: The New Award-Winning Indie Film For Weed Lovers

gg Green Is Gold: The New Award Winning Indie Film For Weed Lovers

For fans of independent films, Green is Gold is a micro-budget motion picture that explores the intricacies of the illegal cannabis industry in California. It’s based on a 13-year-old boy who moves in with his brother who happens to be a cannabis dealer in Northern California. With a rock solid plot and excellent acting, this movie took home the Best Fiction Feature Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Green is Gold delves into the life of a dealer

Filmmaker Ryon Baxter’s goal in the film is to demonstrate the perspective of a 13-year-old observing and assisting his older brother in running an illegal cannabis grow.

He shows the interworking’s of the relationship between the two very well and it proves to assist the narrative to its climax.

The protagonist’s nonchalant attitude towards security and discretion in the illegal business adds a sense of nervousness from the viewer. Even though the characters are situated in a small town in Northern California, the older brother insists on keeping his operation relaxed.

The movie jumps in and out of scenes that further cement the relationship between the two. All in preparation for the climax, the pay day that the whole movie is working towards. Their chance to follow through on the movie’s title, Green to Gold.

Critics have praised the filmmaker for creating such an enticing film for the amount of resources that were available.

Baxter favors a no-frills filmmaking style, relying on practical locations, handheld camerawork and a cast consisting primarily of nonprofessionals.

Green is Gold can contemplate a welcome reception in digital formats and could even manage a limited run in appropriately attuned markets. – The Hollywood Reporter

Tommy Chong Brings His Choice Brand Of Bud To Colorado

cc7 1 Tommy Chong Brings His Choice Brand Of Bud To Colorado

One recent Thursday evening, Cultivated Synergy, a popular co-working space for ganjapreneurs in downtown Denver was transformed into a rip-roaring cannabis celebration in honor of Tommy Chong and his Chong’s Choice cannabis brand launch in Colorado. It was a 420-party fit for a pot legend.

Welcome to Colorado!

cc5 Tommy Chong Brings His Choice Brand Of Bud To Colorado

On the menu: Drinks, food, and Chong’s Choice cannabis pre-rolls.

It was great timing as just about every cannabis measure passed on Election Day – except Arizona (perhaps they are too into their iced teas?)

The support for cannabis is great news for cannabis pioneers like Tommy Chong.

Just days after the election, he explained how the overwhelming support for marijuana is a win-win situation for everyone.

If we go legal we pay taxes, if we don’t go legal we don’t pay taxes – either way, it’s not going to stop the demand.

That goes for recreational in California as well.

Tommy Chong is taking his own advice to the bank

A lifelong pothead who’s battled Hollywood, law enforcement, and cancer, Chong said the plant is a source of strength as it keeps his body healthy and his mind sharp.

Tommy explained that he was a weightlifter and bodybuilder, as well as a stoner.

I proved the pothead stigma wrong back then when I was writing and acting in Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke. Cheech and I were in incredible shape.”

It was a conscious decision.

I found that girls are attracted to men with a good body, so I spent most of my early life trying to get in shape – and my heroes like Schwarzenegger and Steve Reeves smoked… They wouldn’t touch sugar, cigarettes, but they would all smoke pot.

It also helped him battle cancer later in life.

I was in the cancer ward and I felt so out of place. They were in pain, looking grey, with the same thing I had. The difference was, they never took care of their body early on, and I did.

His commitment to health has given him plenty of stamina. After addressing the crowd of cannabis enthusiasts and ganjapreneurs, he took photos with fans, signed a vintage t-shirt with his likeness, and kindly obliged to sign a woman’s chest with the tip of his pen.

You can smoke with the legend, too

Chong’s Choice joints come with an image of his face on the paper.

It’s a fun detail most smokers catch onto as they lift the joint to their face. “It’s like you’re smoking with the legend himself,” said one attendee.

Chong also opted to include THC strips as part of his Colorado roll-out. The dissolvable strips act like breath strips; you place it on the tongue to intake the THC. It’s part of their commitment to cutting edge technology and offering more ways for patients to take their medicine.

Proud of his new line of products, the cannabis connoisseur is also honored to be able to make people laugh.

I’ve been asked if I would want my kids to see the Chong character, and as I see it, Cheech and Chong are happy, and not hurting a soul. Girls would always say, ‘Well he made me laugh’, I think that’s the greatest compliment a person could have.

Canada Needs To Decide It’s Policy On Medical Cannabis For Vets

Feds closer to hero Canada Needs To Decide Its Policy On Medical Cannabis For Vets

The Trudeau government, alongside the Veterans Affairs Department, are getting closer to an agreement about how much medical cannabis is warranted for vets suffering from conditions the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After many officials argued that the prescribed ten grams per day was too high, an official investigation began, hoping to turn up a favorable amount for all involved parties. After months of research and investigation, it seems they may finally be close to an agreement. Check out the full story in the video below.

Fighting for the vets

When it comes to medical cannabis for veterans, Trudeau, and the Canadian government has left the decision up to doctors. After some officials brought up concerns about the high amount of cannabis that is being prescribed to some vets, the Veterans Affairs Department began an internal investigation earlier this year.

Many advocates believe the decision on how much cannabis is enough for a suffering vet should be left up to the doctor, just like any other medication dosage would be.

Others, however, thinks some people are using the program as a way to get cannabis legally, but then use it illegally to get high, rather than a form of medication as it is intended.

Veterans Affairs Minister Kent Hehr released information showing that the investigation has come to an end and says that he expects the government will release a policy on the issue within the next few months.

We are going through our research and our collaborations with veteran stakeholders to make an informed policy-based decision that’s going to lead to outcomes that are positive for our veterans and their families. We’ll be coming out in the near future with a policy framework that guides us in leading to better outcomes.

Rising costs

Some officials believe there is too much medical cannabis being passed out to veterans, leaving an opportunity for abuse.

Many have come forward in opposition of the ten grams per day limit, not to mention the extreme increase in prescriptions for medical cannabis that have come up over the last few years. Their main cause for concern is the financial strain these new prescriptions are putting on taxpayers.

Justin Ling, from Vice Canada, points out that the Canadian government is spending $20 million per year on the medical cannabis program that provides the daily dosage for vets.

While these numbers are increasing daily, it does seem there has to be a better way to provide the medication theses veterans need, while controlling the cost to those who don’t use medical cannabis.

One of that largest problems is the unregulated market, where some providers are charging veterans $4-$5 more per gram than the average dispensary. These dispensaries, along with a variety of other factors, are causing the high spike in government costs that is raising questions about the program.

Jake Plummer Auctions Game-Day Experiences For CBD Research

jake cbd hero Jake Plummer Auctions Game Day Experiences For CBD Research

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is positioning himself to become the tip of the cannabis research spear. Plummer is auctioning off 16 game-day experiences to fund a series of studies on cannabinoid treatments for brain trauma and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Game day with Snake

Dubbed as “Game Day with the Snake”, the fundraiser offers cannabis supporters and football fans the opportunity to bid on a variety of game-day experiences.

Included in the packages are tickets to the Broncos VS. Raiders rematch on January 1st, 2017. The winning bidders will be shuttled on a private bus with Plummer and “surprise VIP guests” to a pre-game tailgate party.

Each participant will get to spend time with Plummer and other Broncos players. They will also receive a swag bag packed with Broncos goodies and some exciting and legal CBD products.

Plummer is taking the canna-bull by the horns as he continues to make public appearances in the name of legalization and safe use.

I want to help spread the word and help my brothers with healing. Things like this can move rapidly. If the NFL gets involved it will go faster. – Plummer

Plummer recently made an appearance at the Honey Cellar dispensary in Boulder, Colorado. While at the Honey Cellar, Plummer joked with fans, served some of the finest concentrates to customers, and recorded his latest “Snakes Takes” podcast.

His attendance at this event was designed to create excitement about cannabis, while also providing ongoing education and support to customers.

Last year, Plummer participated in the Realm of Caring’s football-themed fundraiser, When the Bright Lights Fade. His ongoing mission to reform the NFL’s cannabis policy is motivated by his desire to help his teammates heal – on their own terms.

As a result of the When the Bright Lights Fade, the NFL Players Association formed a pain management committee to study the viability of cannabis as an alternative to addictive pain medications, like Oxycontin.

Plummer’s has concerns about the rigorous NFL schedule and the potential for player injuries during short weeks, like Thanksgiving.

I worry about the six teams that are on a 3-day rest for Thanksgiving. Those guys are not always ready to perform. If you think about it, if everyone who watched football on Thanksgiving Day gave $.25 cents (to cannabis research), we could change the whole thing.

Almost there

The efforts of Plummer, The Realm of Caring, and other players like him, are pushing the needle in the right direction. The NFLPA is signaling that they are ready to explore cannabis as a pain management technique. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we continue to provide supporting data.

We need the research to find out cannabis’ efficacy and we need money to do the research. – Jake Plummer.

You can bid on Game Day with Snake experiences here: http://ift.tt/2fXdokG

Please check it out. Hopefully, you can be a part of the wonderful efforts of Plummer and the Realm of Caring.

After almost a decade behind bars, Schapelle Corby will finally be returning to the Gold Coast in May. In 2005, Corby received a conviction for smuggling 4.2 kilos of cannabis into Bali. Now, with six months left on her sentence to serve, the 39-year-old is looking forward to coming home. Although it’s unclear as to what her plans are, her sister Mercedes says it’s nice to wait and see what happens. Be sure to check out the video below to hear about what she’s doing in the meantime.

Schapelle Corby is returning to the Gold Coast

In 2005, Schapelle Corby was caught smuggling 4.2 kilos of cannabis into Bali. Despite Corby protesting her innocence throughout the trial, the 39-year-old spent almost a decade in prison.

However, there is now confirmation of her release date, which is May 27, 2017, according to News Corp. Therefore, Corby gets to call the Gold Coast home once again.

Although her plans aren’t necessarily clear, indications point out that she will be joining her sister Mercedes. Moreover, there’s a possibility that she will be working at Mercedes’s new Coolangatta bar, Laneway Dining and Bar.

According to Mercedes, the bar is a family business. However, it’s unclear as to where Corby will fit in there,

No, we don’t really talk about that stuff. We’ll wait to see what happens. For now it’s just nice to wait and see what happens when it gets closer to her coming home.

In February of 2014, Corby became the first Australian to be granted parole in Bali and the second in Indonesia.

Upon release, it is suspected that Corby will be deported immediately from Indonesia and back to the Gold Coast.

You Can’t Mix Bud & Booze In Denver Bars, Say City Officials

budbooze You Cant Mix Bud & Booze In Denver Bars, Say City Officials

When news broke that Denver is approving public cannabis consumption, weed enthusiasts everywhere couldn’t help but rejoice. In fact, 53.5 percent of voters were for Initiative 300, which states that it’s okay to consume cannabis at bars. However, state officials are now deciding that cannabis and alcohol need not mix. Although some professionals agree with the new rule, cannabis advocates, like Wanda James, are against it. Be sure to check out the video below to hear why state officials are changing their minds.

Ignoring Initiative 300

Thanks to Initiative 300 and 53.5 percent of Denver voters, businesses with permits can allow public cannabis consumption beginning in January. However, just days after passing the measure, people will no longer be able to use cannabis at bars.

Initially, Initiative 300 made it legal to use cannabis at many places, including bars, yoga studios and coffee shops. Because of the studies that state that alcohol mixed with pot increases the risk of car crashes and higher impairment, bars are no longer on the list.

Some Denver professionals agree with the new rule, but cannabis advocates aren’t too happy with the sudden change. Challys Maybee, a bar patron, has mixed feelings on the matter,

Tourists (and) everyone needs a safe place where they can exercise their rights. But in a bar, it’s definitely an imposition on other people’s rights. Not everyone is for marijuana.

Although other professionals in the alcohol industry have feelings similar to Maybee’s, cannabis industry experts, including Wanda James, believe the new rule treats people as though they are criminals,

We’ve legalized cannabis. People are excited to come in record numbers, and come to Denver and come to Colorado and spend money. And then when they come here and legally buy cannabis, we then treat them as criminals because there is nowhere for them to consume here in Denver.

Florida Woman turns hero This Florida Woman Beat Breast Cancer Using Only Cannabis Oil

As a result of the passing of Florida’s Amendment Two, people are seeking alternative treatment for their ailments, including cancer. One of those people is Tammy Levent, who refused traditional treatments for her breast cancer. After making the decision to rely on cannabis oil solely, Levent is now cancer free. Although success stories like Levent’s are anecdotal, Amendment Two is now opening the door to further research on the matter. Check out the video below to hear how cannabis is keeping Levent’s cancer at bay.

Tammy Levent treated cancer with medical cannabis

Due to the passing of Amendment Two in Florida, individuals are eager to seek alternative treatment for a variety of health conditions, which include cancer.

Tammy Levent is currently using cannabis oil to keep her cancer in remission. During May of 2015, Levent became diagnosed with malignant breast cancer. Although the disease quickly began to grow, she refused to seek traditional treatments,

They thought I was absolutely insane. They’re like it’s not going work, you can’t be doing this, and I was like it’s my body, and this is what I want to do.

Despite going against doctor’s orders by relying on strictly cannabis oil, she is now cancer free, and doctors are now scratching their heads as to how cannabis is keeping the disease at bay.

Upon checking Levent’s bloodwork, Lisa Genovese, a nurse on Levent’s medical team, could not explain what she saw,

When I looked at Tammy’s blood work the tumor markers were all zero – and I couldn’t explain it.

Dr. Palanca, Levent’s medical cannabis doctor, hopes that stories like Levent’s will encourage people to do further research on cannabis and its ability to treat cancer.

There are 29 states, and Washington D.C., that allow or have voted to allow medical cannabis. However, North Carolina is still not a part of the list. Currently, cannabis is still illegal in the state. For this reason, North Carolinians are pushing for legalization. From Vietnam veterans to mothers with sick children, you wouldn’t expect these individuals to be users. But they are, and as of now, they have no other choice but to use the medicine illegally. Be sure to check out the video below to hear their stories.

North Carolina and the push for legal cannabis

Following the 2016 election, several states gave the approval to legalize cannabis. Unfortunately, North Carolina was not one of them. Therefore, the North Carolinians that rely on it must still use it illegally and continue breaking the law.

One user, in particular, is 73-year-old Perry Parks, a U.S. military veteran. Parks suffers from PTSD and relies on cannabis to treat his symptoms. From nightmares to trouble sleeping, the condition is so ugly that many soldiers don’t talk about it, according to Parks.

Another North Carolinian relying on illegal cannabis is 18-year-old Jackson Helms. According to his mother Kelly, cannabis is their miracle drug. Cannabis, in particular, helps with Jackson’s severe seizures.

In like manner, a mother by the name of Kendra Martin gives cannabis to her daughter. In fact, Martin relies on various forms of cannabis to treat her daughter’s seizures, including cannabis-infused water and capsules.

Could Texas Be The Next State To Legalize Cannabis?

Texas Be The Next hero Could Texas Be The Next State To Legalize Cannabis?

After the recent elections, more and more states are showing that we, as a nation, want cannabis legalized. Now, Texas cannabis advocates are waiting patiently for lawmakers to review a bill that would expand the legal medical cannabis market beyond the current restrictions of only permitting those patients suffering from intractable epilepsy to receive very low doses of THC.

Texas makes a change

In as little as a few weeks, Texas could see their medical cannabis policies expand and include a variety of new eligible illnesses.

Despite the fact that the state has carried one of the strictest medical cannabis policies in the country, thanks to the recent legalization in states like Florida and Arkansas, cannabis supporters believe Texas will finally take a serious look at making some much-needed changes to their own policy.

Heather Fazio, the Texas Political Director of the Marijuana Policy Project, has been working on a new bill to allow for a more accepting cannabis program. She is certain there are many others who would benefit from the life-saving properties offered by medical cannabis.

We want to see that program be made more inclusive for patients suffering from cancer, going through chemo, veterans suffering from PTSD.

Presidential impact

Probably the most important election outcome was that of the President-elect Donald Trump now has the power to change any state-level laws and make cannabis fully illegal once again.

While he has made mixed comments about the issue, John Herman, a political science professor, believes Trump could enact certain laws for border states, like Texas, who see a higher-than-average rate of illegal drugs pouring in from Mexico.

President-elect Trump could rescind and say that states can’t pass their own laws. We are border states. There are illegal drugs. We have some of the toughest laws on criminalization of a controlled substance.

With all these facts in place, it’s likely Texas will have a tougher time passing any amendments to their medical cannabis policies. However, advocates remain hopeful and believe their perseverance in about to pay off.

Immediately, he starts the show off by saying he didn’t know that Hillary would lose the election. However, he also says he did suspect it because he knows ‘how the whites can be’. Therefore, Trump’s victory came as no surprise to Chapelle.

Further into the episode, Chapelle discusses white Americans and the anti-Trump protests,

I watched a white riot in Portland, Oregon on television the other night. News said they did a million dollars worth of damage. Every black person’s watching that like, ‘Amateurs’.

While hosting, Chapelle also throws a diss at America’s new president,

“America’s done it. We’ve actually elected an internet troll as our president.”

Although Chapelle isn’t exactly happy about Trump’s win, he still wishes Trump luck and is willing to give him a chance. However, he also demands that he give the world one too. Don’t forget to check out Dave Chapelle’s return to television in the video below.

Can you agree with Chapelle and his thoughts on the election? What are your thoughts on Trump being America’s president? Share with us on Facebook, Twitter, or in the comments below. We would love to hear from you.

Bill Maher: ‘This Election Gave Us Permission To Smoke Weed, And A Reason We Need To’

billmaher Bill Maher: ‘This Election Gave Us Permission To Smoke Weed, And A Reason We Need To’

Along with the rest of America, Bill Maher agrees that this election gave us a reason to smoke weed. During Friday’s appearance on Real Time, Bill spoke his thoughts on Trump’s victory. Within the first few seconds, you can tell where he stands, and he’s certainly not alone. After acknowledging the several states that are legalizing cannabis, one thing we can all agree on is that it is time for a road trip. Be sure to check out the video below for Maher’s hilarious thoughts on the election.

Bill Maher, no stranger to cannabis love

Bill Maher has long been an advocate of cannabis reform. Who could forget the time he famously lit up on air after rationalizing that the only people who stood to lose from cannabis legalization was big pharma, alcohol and tobacco.

What have I done?

Have you ever woke up after a long night of drinking only to find someone next to you that makes you say to yourself, ‘What have I done?’ If so, you aren’t alone.

During Real Time on Friday, Bill Maher compares Trump‘s victory to that exact situation.

Before getting into politics, Maher immediately speaks about the states that are now legalizing cannabis. Not only does he believe the election is giving us permission to smoke weed, but he also says we now have a reason to light up. The reason, in particular, is Trump entering the White House.

Furthermore, Maher brings up Colorado and why it’s time to start packing our bags,

Colorado legalized assisted suicide. I know what you’re saying – ‘Road trip!’

Obviously, Maher is not too happy about Trump becoming president. Regardless if you feel the same way or not, everyone can agree that smoking weed is necessary now more than ever.

Don’t forget to check out the video below to hear Maher’s funny comments on the election, Trump, and his supporters.

Medical Cannabis Has Nothing To Do With Getting High

nothing to do with getting high heronew Medical Cannabis Has Nothing To Do With Getting High

On Tuesday, Arkansas gave approval to Issue 6, which makes medical cannabis legal. Now, patients are waiting for the process to begin. Despite Arkansas’s approval, along with several other states, the stigma surrounding medical cannabis is very much still alive. From being called a loser to a pothead, the insults never seem to end. However, what many are failing to realize is that it’s not just about getting high. On the contrary, it’s about healing the individuals that so desperately need it. Check out the video below by KHBS to hear from patients themselves as to why medical cannabis has nothing to do with getting high.

Arizona patients await medical cannabis

As a result of Arkansas approving Issue 6 to legalize medical cannabis, patients in the state are now waiting for the medication they so desperately need. Indeed, it’s an exciting time for the individuals that fight for their lives every single day. However, they still want everyone to know one thing: it has nothing to do with getting high.

During the video by KHBS, two patients share their stories and how medical cannabis can make their lives better. Moreover, they discuss the alternatives that are currently failing to heal them.

Corey Hunt, educator, advocate, and co-founder of Illegally Healed stresses the importance of doctors and medical professionals stepping up to learn about the medicine. Moreover, he says this is a huge deal for residents in Arkansas,

It is now our constitutional right as Arkansans to have safe and legal access to medical cannabis. Gone are the days where patients are considered criminals. It’s time to move out of the shadows and into the light.

Ultimately, the patients awaiting their medical cannabis want everyone to understand it’s about improving the quality of their lives, not getting high. Don’t forget to listen to their stories and how medical cannabis will help in the video below.

Here’s Why Patients Should Have Quicker Access To Medicinal Cannabis

Juan Isaiah Cruz III Heres Why Patients Should Have Quicker Access To Medicinal Cannabis

On Monday, one of the first patients in Florida received a full-strength medical cannabis product. The patient is fifteen-year-old Juan Isaiah Cruz III. Due to his incurable brain tumor, he is eligible to use cannabis spray. Now, his family has hope that product can decrease the size of his tumor. Most of all, they see it as a major blessing, for Cruz and other patients. Be sure to hear about his story in the video below.

Juan Isaiah Cruz III receives full-strength medical cannabis

During August of 2014, Juan Cruz, aka JuJu, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Spindle Cell Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer.

Despite multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and visits to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Tennesse, doctors moved him to hospice care.

Now, with a prognosis of less than one year to live, JuJu is eligible to receive a full-strength cannabis spray, delivered and produced by Surterra Therapeutics.

Jacqueline Cuevas, Cruz’s mother, says she has hope that the medicine will shrink not only his tumor but also ease his pain. Moreover, make him less dependent on drugs like Morphine.

Being that it took a lot of time to find a doctor to recommend the product to her son, Cuevas says “this has been a major blessing.”

Eventually, Cruz had his first visit with Dr. Joseph Rosado in Orange City. However, with a 90 day waiting period, it was unclear if he would even make it to delivery day. Therefore, Cruz took it upon himself to speak up on delivery day by inviting reporters into his home to hear of his hopes and struggles. According to Rosado,

This is the kind of case you never hope to have, but Juju is a fighter and he can be an example of why we should allow more patients to have quicker access.

Cannabis Potency: Why Lawmakers Have A Problem With It

Epileptic Boy Removed From Class For Medical Cannabis Shirt

Tony Bascaro: Cuban Exile, Now One Of America’s Oldest Pot Prisoners

How a Cuban Exile hero Tony Bascaro: Cuban Exile, Now One Of Americas Oldest Pot Prisoners

Tony Bascaro, a former Cuban pilot and military officer who joined Miami’s then-burgeoning illicit cannabis trade in the late 1970s, has been in prison since 1980. His imprisonment for the nonviolent crime of cannabis smuggling shines a light on the continued injustices of the Drug War – and the thin yet real hopes for those who have been incarcerated as a result.

The back story

Bascaro started out as a loyalist to Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, who was overthrown by forces loyal to Fidel Castro in 1958. After having been recruited by the CIA to assist in Castro’s ouster, and after missing out on participating in the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion, Bascaro drifted down to Guatemala in pursuit of a woman with whom he’d fallen in love.

By 1977, Bascaro had divorced and moved to Miami, then the drug capital of the Western world. Bascaro, who had served as a pilot in various capacities, including as a crop duster and fighter pilot, was recruited as a cannabis smuggler and offloader.

According to Bascaro, the exhilaration of the drug-smuggling life was comparable to serving in the military.

It was exciting… I wasn’t fighting in the war, but it was something similar.

The excitement of the life Bascaro was living was evidently not meant to last. American authorities caught wind of his operation in 1978, and in 1980 he was tried and convicted of cannabis possession.

What lengthened his sentence, however, was that he refused to provide prosecutors with additional information regarding his operation – while some of his cohorts did not.

Harsh punishment

Bascaro was sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison, a number arrived at by prosecutors in several different ways.

First, members of Bascaro’s operation offered prosecutors detailed descriptions of both their own roles and the roles of others in the enterprise, including Bascaro himself. That decision served to subtract years from their own sentences while also adding years to Bascaro’s.

Secondly, and more broadly, the rise of mandatory minimum sentencing in the early 1980s, coupled with the excesses of the Drug War more broadly, contributed to a sentence for Bascaro that is perceived as having been more stringent than was necessary.

According to Mary Price of Families Against Mandatory Minimums, the sentence handed down to Bascaro was “ridiculous.”

Is the fact that Mr. Bascaro didn’t cooperate worth 28 years? It’s not… Nothing justifies that difference.

Tony Bascaro, hope for an early release?

As the Drug War’s overreach is slowly scaled back and the regulations imposed during its height are corrected, there is a small yet renewed hope that Tony Bascaro’s sentence may be dramatically reduced.

For starters, the 81-year-old has earned a release date of 2019 because the details of his case fall under the pre-Drug War rules. His family and advocates, however, look for him to be out even sooner.

There is reason to believe that it could happen. President Obama has set about commuting the sentences of hundreds of nonviolent felons, many of whom were convicted and imprisoned for crimes related to the War on Drugs.

Bascaro’s appeals to the administration have been denied, though he will have another crack at clemency next year.

Many in the law enforcement community remain bewildered by Bascaro’s continued incarceration. Among that group is Nickolas Geeker, the former U.S. Attorney in Florida responsible for successfully prosecuting Bascaro all those years ago.

With what the president has done with the sentences of other people dealing in more substantial, harder drugs that Tony Bascaro was, why he would still be in there I really have no explanation.

Ohio’s Medical Cannabis Laws Don’t Do Enough To Help Patients

Ohio medical marijuana hero Ohios Medical Cannabis Laws Dont Do Enough To Help Patients

A committee tasked with constructing new rules around Ohio’s fledgling medical cannabis program has proposed limiting the number of licensed growers in the state to 18, as well as financial fees that could prove prohibitive to cultivators looking to enter the medical cannabis sphere.

Background on Ohio’s medical cannabis laws

Ohio passed legislation forming its medical cannabis regime in June of this year but which took effect in September.

The measure, which allows the state one year to have the program fully in place, allows for cannabis to use to treat 22 debilitating or life-threatening illnesses, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, Crohn’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, among others.

Some studies have already been conducted into how lucrative the state’s program could become: One estimate, published in August, found that the state could generate between $200 million and $400 million in sales per year.

The Ohio Supreme Court has already ruled that Ohio attorneys may offer assistance to clients who are looking to use medical cannabis.

However, other areas of the law, including limits on the amounts of cannabis patients are allowed to possess, or whether the state will impose any reciprocity agreements with other states, have yet to be specified.

Proposed rules

The Ohio Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee, a branch of the Ohio Department of Commerce charged with devising new recommendations on how the state’s medical cannabis program will take shape, met this week for its inaugural meeting.

The committee recommended that growth licenses be granted to no more than 12 larger cultivators and 6 smaller ones.

Under the recommendations, those looking to establish large growth facilities, known as a Level I license, would be hit with an application fee of $20,000 and a licensing fee of $180,000. The facilities would encompass no more than 15,000 feet of growing space.

Those looking to establish smaller facilities, Level II, would be asked to pay an application fee of $2,000 and a licensing fee of $18,000. The facilities would encompass no more than 1,600 feet of growing space.

According to Jacqueline Williams, the director of the Ohio Department of Commerce, the proposals were offered with the public’s interests in mind.

Our goal is to develop a program that ensures the safety of the public and ensures access to safe medical products.

Reactions

The committee’s recommendations have been met with opposition from cannabis activists, many of whom worry that the financial burdens are too great on aspiring cultivators and that the number of proposed facilities are not nearly enough.

According to Aaron Marshall of Ohioans for Medical Marijuana, the proposed regulations would not do nearly enough to service the needs of the state’s medical cannabis patients.

We have said we think about 188,000 patients would qualify for medical marijuana… If that is even in the ballpark, you would have to double the amount of land the rules are considering.

Law Of The Land: Medical Cannabis In Michigan

Cannabis in Michigan hero Law Of The Land: Medical Cannabis In Michigan

The history of Michigan is interwoven with the history of America itself. After having been occupied by French settlers in the 1600s, the state has been the home for such all-American staples as the automobile industry, Motown, and Iggy Pop, among others.  In the years since, however, Michigan has also become known for having a functioning, if not always functional, medical cannabis program.

Cannabis laws in Michigan

Michigan voters in 2008 approved the Michigan Medical Marijuana Initiative, also known as Proposal 1, which passed with 63% of the vote.

The initiative allows for the use of medical cannabis by patients who suffer from certain debilitating or life-threatening medical conditions, including Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV/AIDS, and chronic pain, among 10 others.

The measure also required the state to construct a registry of patients who qualify to use the herb.

Certified patients may possess up to two and a half ounces of cannabis, and cultivate up to 12 cannabis plants.

Michigan does not yet allow for the legal use of recreational cannabis. However, the state has a robust medical cannabis program that has been continually revised since its initial passage eight years ago.

Have there been any recent changes?

Though Michigan did put its medical cannabis regime into place eight years ago, the program has struggled to gain its footing due to lack of clarity within the law and a resulting string of lawsuits.

The cascade of legal action ultimately led for the state Legislature to pass a number of tweaks the state program. The first, House Bill 4209, endowed local governments with greater oversight over certain details of cannabis programs within their borders.

They also built a registration framework within which cannabis industry professionals, like cultivators, sellers, and others, could operate.

The second bill, dubbed House Bill 4827, established a monitoring program from the growth of a given cannabis plant to its ultimate sale to patients.

And lastly, House BIll 4210 establishes a framework for medical cannabis edibles to manufactured and distributed by and for patients who are in need of them.

The bills were ultimately signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder.

On the horizon

Though the ship that is the Michigan cannabis program has steered into calmer waters, the state’s cannabis activists have nonetheless faced setbacks as they struggle for greater access to the plant for the public.

A judge on the U.S. District Court in September rejected a motion to halt the state’s printing of election ballots in order to place the issue of full recreational cannabis legalization on the state ballot.

Another setback is the number arrests that take place in Michigan due to cannabis. The numbers indicate that arrests for cannabis have jumped 17% (though the amount of statewide crime has declined.)

What’s Barack Obama’s Real Opinion On Cannabis?

obamamayer Whats Barack Obamas Real Opinion On Cannabis?

After years of begging to have him on the program, Bill Maher finally lands an interview with the Commander in Chief Barack Obama. Topics swayed between foreign policy, food production, the upcoming election, and of course, Bill included an early question about cannabis. To see Obama’s full answer, skip to around the 7-minute mark of the interview.

Obama: The professional pivoter

For those who aren’t familiar with political rhetoric, a pivot is when a politician attempts to distract the listeners from the original question by increasing the complexity of the conversation.

When Maher brings up the call for cannabis reform at the federal level, Obama does everything in his power to avoid talking about federal legalization and decriminalization.

Instead, he explains why cannabis is similar to tobacco and alcohol in terms of public health.

His mindset still sees cannabis as an enemy to public safety. That’s why his administration has done nothing to reschedule the plant to a less serious class.

So with Obama leaving office soon, will the next president begin a progressive approach to federal cannabis policy?

Sally is your typical mother that spends her days preparing meals, cleaning and taking care of her children. However, her daily routine just so happens to include illegal cannabis that she uses to treat her chronic pain.

Not only does it help with the symptoms she experiences from pharmaceuticals, but it also helps give her an appetite. However, with little funds for the plant, and the fact that it remains illegal, getting her hands on cannabis is not easy.

According to Dr. Huhana Hickey, people in a situation like Sally’s are afraid to take the illegal route but are suffering and have no other choice. In fact, she receives several calls a day from people, including retirees, that are desperately needing cannabis.

In general, this problem is one that is continuing to grow. As a result of Story reaching out to people that rely on medicinal cannabis, they were left with an overwhelming amount of responses from people from all walks of life.

Is Bitcoin Blockchain The Future Of Tracing Your Weed?

Bitcoin Blockchain hero Is Bitcoin Blockchain The Future Of Tracing Your Weed?

A cannabis testing company is creating a new registry of cannabis strains on the Bitcoin blockchain, a move that would make the cannabis space exponentially more sophisticated as it enters the mainstream.

What’s the story?

It all starts with Medicinal Genomics, a cannabis testing company – that is, a company that tests strains of cannabis so as to assist growers with certain details of the cultivation process.

Testing companies help fill a void that exists within the U.S.’s fledgling cannabis industry: Because of federal prohibition, there exists no standardized testing of cannabis strains that are cultivated and sold to consumers.

Among the variables with which testing companies are involved are helping growers adhere to certain state standards regarding pesticide use; avoiding certain nuisances to the cannabis plant.

Theses include pests and mold; assuring a certain level of cannabinoids with each strain; monitoring the potency of certain strains and products; and checking a given strain’s dosage levels for medical patients.

Now, Medicinal Genomics has taken the involvement of the cannabis testing company one step further: They are enabling their clients to register their given strains on the Bitcoin blockchain – described as “the public ledger of all transactions on the Bitcoin network.”

Why get on the Bitcoin blockchain?

In short, the answer is that getting on the blockchain will provide reference and guidance to entrepreneurs and cannabis enthusiasts looking to establish their own cannabis strains.

For a fee of $600, Medicinal Genomics essentially tests cannabis strains in order to determine and store on the blockchain each strain’s genome. The process enables individual growers to establish timestamped intellectual property rights for individual strains.

This potentially shields them from legal conflicts that may arise with other growers who have filed for a patent with the U.S. Patent Office.

Medicinal Genomics’ chief science officer, Kevin McKernan, has stressed the value of integrating the company’s blockchain into Bitcoins rather than trying to go it alone by creating a blockchain on their own.

The Bitcoin blockchain has been going since 2009 and its security is in its proof of work… If you’re dealing with customers’ intellectual property and you’re putting it in some side chain that you’re supporting, if your network goes down and you don’t manage that well, then you’ve let them all down.

What to expect from here?

Medicinal Genomics has already registered roughly 1000 cannabis strains within Bitcoin’s blockchain, taking pains to ensure that the origins of given strains are recorded and kept.

For consumers, Medicinal Genomics’ decision has the potential to be a game-changer. Instead of having to speculate about the authenticity of a given strain, consumers and patients alike will be able to verify through the Bitcoin blockchain whether the substance they are being sold adheres to the strain’s initial registration within Medical Genomics’ Bitcoin repository.

How Hemp Could Be A Gold Mine For Native Americans

nativeamerican hemp hero How Hemp Could Be A Gold Mine For Native Americans

As it turns out, hemp may be the next gold mine for Native Americans. Under US law, people can only grow hemp for research purposes. However, the Department of Justice made an agreement in 2014 to allow tribes to set their own laws in regards to cannabis. As a result, the doors to hemp cultivation are opening. Check out the video below.

Hemp: the next gold mine for Native Americans

From decreasing the amount of poverty to allowing tribes to return to their old roots of using plant-based medicines, hemp is the answer. Although casinos are boosting the Native American’s economy, hemp is capable of doing even more.

Under U.S. law, hemp can be grown only for research, with a permit from the DEA.

However, the Department of Justice opened the door for hemp cultivation by Native American tribes in 2014 when it agreed that tribes can set cannabis-related laws just as states can.

The industrial hemp project could probably overtake Indian gaming, not only in terms of employment but also in terms of revenue to the Navajo – Al Henderson, senior Navajo economic adviser,

Native American-owned CannaNative LLC says that they had final talks with the Navajo Nation, the largest federally-recognized tribe, about growing industrial hemp. The company has already made a deal with Medical Marijuana Inc to produce the first hemp oil products. Specifically, for more than 560 Native American tribes.

At present, the Navajo Nation is speaking with CannaNative LLC about beginning the cultivation of hemp on reservation land in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.

As a result of the deal with the Navajo Nation, it’s possible the company can help hemp cultivation make its way to the US. Moreover, it can cut costs by more than 25%, according to Chief Executive Stu Titus,

Our goal is to plant our initial pilot program test crop in the spring of 2017 in the Navajo Nation.
