Actor Kevin Smith breaks into medical weed: “the stoner stereotype is dying”

GettyImages 488852780 800x400 Actor Kevin Smith breaks into medical weed: the stoner stereotype is dying

For upwards of two decades, Kevin Smith donned a dark green trench coat and white cap, standing at the far end of a small New Jersey strip mall trying to peddle some green. Now Smith is getting into medical cannabis, partnering with Beleave Inc. (CSE: BE), one of the most innovative licensed producers on the continent.

Most know Smith as Silent Bob, a character of Smith’s creation and unspoken bucko to Jay, a habitual smoker, and layabout played by Jason Mewes. Kevin Smith’s alter ego, Silent Bob, had his own alter ego, Chronic, the sidekick to Jason Mewes’ Bluntman. The superheroes were, in theory, crime fighters. The twofer appeared in Afroman’s video for ‘Because I Got High,’ which Smith directed. The video ends with the three of them smoking a joint the size of a sweet potato.

Gobsmacking as this sounds, Smith wasn’t actually using marijuana at the time.

Despite being the most popular creator of stoner cinema since Cheech and Chong, Kevin Smith hadn’t picked up many blunts until after the Jay and Silent Bob saga. He cites the influence of Seth Rogen on the set of Zack and Miri Make a Porno in 2008 for becoming the stoner he long made himself out to be. He was 38 at the time.

“The couch-surfing stoners you see in movies, even Jay & Silent Bob movies, are a dying stereotype,” Kevin Smith told Herb. “Now we’re more educated on the benefits of cannabis and we know those benefits go well beyond simply getting ‘stoned.'”

via GIPHY

Jay and Silent Bob probably wouldn’t see eye to eye with Kevin Smith on cannabis. The director’s newfound appreciation of the herb is less about glorious slackerdom and more about medical wellness.

“Kids don’t need cannabis,” says Smith, “life is long and full of hope and promise when you’re a teenager. But when you hit mid-life, your body starts working against you and your mortality suddenly looms large. Marijuana can counter not only the physical effects of aging but also the psychological effects.”

For all the good it does himself, Kevin Smith says the effects on his 72-year-old mother are much more significant. “She’s on a legion of pharmaceuticals,” he says, “the second half of which she takes solely to counter the unwanted side effects of the first half. But when I was able to introduce medical marijuana into her steady diet of pills, she noticed an instant change.”

Kevin Smith has been impressed by how cannabis has improved his mother’s sleeping habits, energy, and focus. Smith’s mother tells him that when she consumes cannabis, she feels younger.

It is probably for reasons such as this that Smith isn’t entering the cannabis world to align himself with a glassware maker or ‘Snoochie Boochie’ branded edibles but the rapidly growing, publicly traded Canadian medical cannabis supplier Beleave.

“I chose Beleave to partner with because of their stellar reputations in the medical marijuana field,” says Smith, “because of their reputations as the mad scientists of medical marijuana. The Beleave grow operation is astoundingly high-tech and incredibly efficient and their products are top notch. Every day, they’re reinventing what we think we know about medical marijuana through science and technology.”

Beleave is championing the therapeutic benefits of cannabis through an approach to growing that puts community and science first. There is mounting evidence, that cannabis acts as an anti-inflammatory and could help control the development of neurodegenerative diseases. This an issue that Beleave’s Chief Science Officer, Roger Ferreira, Ph.D., is particularly passionate about. Unlike other growers that aim to make fast-cash in an emerging market, Beleave aims to build their success on quality product and a business practice rooted in principle. Even their grow facilities aim to address carbon emissions by incorporating a large-scale solar installation to reduce their environmental impact.

Smith’s similarly impressed by Canada’s efforts to legalize cannabis for adult-use on a federal level, hoping that Americans will take note when Canada resists devolving into some smokey hellhole. In fact, Kevin Smith is watching his home turf of New Jersey come around as we speak.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has served for two terms, and for those eight years, he has not minced words on marijuana. While medical marijuana has been legal in the state since 2013, he still views cannabis as a public threat. He describes the legalization movement as an attempt to “poison our kids” which is equal to the government accepting “blood money.” But with Christie out of the way in 2018, many believe the countdown to legal weed in Jersey will finally begin. Lawmakers have already started preparing the legislation to enact recreational sales.

“Watching New Jersey move toward legalization has been a thrill,” says Smith, “considering the state used to set records for possession arrests. And legal weed means the police and prosecutors can concentrate on real crime instead of punishing people for possession. I’m proud of my home state, even though legalization means Jay and Silent Bob are now out of a job.”

The ultimate guide on how to clean a bong

Howtocleanabong 800x400 The ultimate guide on how to clean a bong

How To Clean A Bong

If you’ve gone to all the trouble of getting some righteously dank weed, it’s just not right to smoke it through a nasty bong. You can probably recall a couple times when someone’s dirty piece almost ruined your enjoyment of what, otherwise, would have been a tasty bowl. That’s why you need to know how to clean a bong and how to clean a glass bong specifically—it’s not that hard.

(Note: commercial cleaning liquids are available, but in our experience, the methods below work just as well.)

How Often Should You Clean Your Bong or Water Pipe?

How often you clean your bong is a personal choice depending on your comfort level. It also, of course, depends on how often you smoke.

There are some folks who clean their piece weekly; some clean it daily. And, believe it or not, I personally know some pro-level tokers who refuse to use a piece unless it is cleaned after every hit or two. That’s a little much though.

If you’re a heavy smoker, you should probably clean your piece every one to two days. At a minimum, change your dirty bong water every day. Keeping fresh water in your bong helps prevent the growth of bacteria.

Why A Clean Bong Is Important

A sparkling clean bong is a thing of beauty. Not only does cannabis taste its best through a clean piece, but it makes for a better smoke session with friends.

Perhaps the best reason of all to keep clean a bong, however, is that smoking from a dirty piece can cause respiratory irritation. It can even put you at a greater risk for lung infection.

Signs You Need To Clean Your Bong

Before we get into how to clean your bong, here are some signs that it’s time:

  • Slimy film inside the bong
  • Heavy resin buildup
  • Brown, discolored bong water
  • Especially smell bong water
  • White or gray mold fuzz on resin build up
  • White or black specks along bong or water pipe walls

How To Clean A Bong With Alcohol

We’ll just say it. This is, in our opinion, hands down, the best way to clean a bong. (For instructions on how to clean a bong without alcohol, see below).

1. Gather cleaning supplies

via GIPHY

To get that piece just as clean as it was the day you fell in love with it, you’ll need the following items:

  • Table salt, rock salt, or rice (abrasives)
  • Rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol, preferably 91% or 99% (cleans much better)
  • Pipe cleaners, twist-ties, etc., to clean stem and other tight spots
  • Small pieces of fabric, cotton, or cork with which to plug stem and cover bong
  • Rubber bands to secure parts while shaking
  • Optional: Plastic gloves because isopropyl’s rough on your skin and grunge is gross on your hands

Make sure you have these necessary elements in place when figuring out how to clean your bong, Then, you’re ready to get started. This method takes about 20-40 minutes, depending on your level of detail.

2. Take the piece apart, rinse with water

via GIPHY

Remove all detachable parts from the piece, paying, of course, particular attention to the bowl and stem. Rinse everything thoroughly with water. Hot water can help dislodge big wads of gross resin from inside.

3. Add alcohol and abrasive (rice or salt)

via GIPHY

Now it’s time to add your alcohol (solvent) and salt or rice (abrasives) to the bong. Add the abrasives first; if you use salt, use enough so that it doesn’t all dissolve in the alcohol (you need enough abrasion for scrubbing). After adding alcohol, cover the stem and the tube with pieces of fabric, cotton, or cork and secure them.

4. Shake vigorously, repeat. Soak.

via GIPHY

Shake the fuck out of your bong with the alcohol and abrasives inside it. I know your arms probably hurt, but this is important. Shake for at least five minutes. Make sure the holes are blocked to prevent alcohol and abrasives from going everywhere. Be careful; you probably have wet hands, and it would be a bummer to drop that expensive glass piece.

The same goes for cleaning a pipe. Immerse it in alcohol and abrasives, and shake for at least five minutes. Thoroughly clean the piece while you’ve got everything out; who knows when you’ll do this again.

If your piece is really dirty, you might need to go through the whole process twice or even three times.

Long-neglected pieces will likely need some soaking time to remove dry, caked-on grunge. If it’s in bad shape, let it soak at least a couple hours; rinse thoroughly afterward with hot water to dislodge any remaining resin.

When you’ve gotten rid of all the icky grunge in your piece, pour the resulting mix of alcohol, abrasives, and grunge into the toilet and magically flush it away.

5. Don’t neglect details

via GIPHY

Some difficult-to-reach parts of your piece, such as the stem, might not get completely cleaned. To address those spots, you can soak pipe cleaners in alcohol until you reach all those stubborn places.

Don’t forget one final, thorough rinse with hot water—you don’t want to leave the residual smell of alcohol in a fine smoking piece. Let the piece dry.

Now, you have a clean piece in which to torch that delicious weed.

How To Clean A Bong Without Alcohol

Although isopropyl alcohol is a safe household solvent when thoroughly rinsed away, some people prefer to avoid using it altogether. It’s a good idea, then, to know how to clean a bong without alcohol. The easiest way is with water.

The key to this method on how to clean a glass bong—which takes about 45 minutes—is to boil enough water to completely cover the piece in a saucepan. Reduce the heat to a simmer and submerge the piece for about 30 minutes. Be sure that the simmer is hot enough to release a few bubbles, but not so hot as to evaporate the water and leave the piece uncovered. (That could lead to cracking.)

After about half an hour has passed, carefully drain the water. Clean and dry the piece thoroughly with a towel, paper towels and/or pipe cleaners.

How To Quickly Clean Your Dirty Bong With Lemon

Some people who don’t like using alcohol think the best way to clean a bong is lemon juice. Some folks actually insist this is the best way to clean a bong. Using this method, which takes about 20 minutes, you can eliminate most of the grunge from a heavily-used piece—and add a more pleasant smell before using it again.

  1. Boil the purest water possible (filtered or bottled water is recommended)
  2. Add lemon juice to your piece—ideally, a freshly squeezed lemon, but a bottle of lemon juice will work too
  3. Carefully pour the boiling water into your lemon-soaked piece
  4. Shake thoroughly, then wait five minutes. This will allow the lemon juice’s acidity and the water’s heat to rid the smell and grunge from your bong.
  5. After the solution has cooled, pour it out and rinse with warm water.

Rapper Joey Bada$$ secretly wrote Post Malone’s “Rockstar”

JoeyBadass 800x400 Rapper Joey Bada$$ secretly wrote Post Malones Rockstar

In the rap world, ghostwriting can be a sticky thing. While it’s a common practice in other mediums, ghostwriting accusations can spark squabbles among rappers, such as the infamous 2015 feud between Drake and Meek Mills.

Still, just before the New Year, in a surprisingly candid string of tweets, rapper Joey Bada$$ admitted he penned one of the biggest hits of 2017. At the end of the year, Joey Bada$$ and T-Pain dropped what was originally thought to be a remix of Post Malone and 21 Savage’s “Rockstar.” The song originally dropped last summer, and soon began topping the Billboard charts, becoming a certified platinum hit. It turned out the version that dropped over the summer wasn’t the original. Over Twitter, T-Pain responded to a fan saying that their remix was, in fact, the original.

“That’s the original,” tweeted T-Pain. “They took me off. And put 21 on. Me and Joey had it first.”

Bada$$ soon corroborated T-Pain’s claim, tweeting, “This is facts… I actually co-wrote the song w post 🙂 quietly got my first #1 off that.” Bada$$ then threw in some dollar bag emojis and said that he’ll try to do more ghostwriting in the new year.

While Bada$$ was never credited on the original single, Malone essentially backed up the story in an older interview. Malone never mentions Bada$$ writing the chart-topper, going only so far as to say that Bada$$ made an appearance in the studio.

“Joey Bada$$ was in there,” Malone told Billboard. “We were just vibing on it and the melody was sick. We just cut like a little scratch vocal and we took it back to LA. I finished my part and sent it off to [21] Savage—and there it is.“

Hear Lil Wayne and Drake’s new Family Feud Freestyle

LilWayne and Drake 800x400 Hear Lil Wayne and Drakes new Family Feud Freestyle

Within hours of Jay-Z dropping his video for ‘Family Feud,’ a track from his latest album 4:44, Lil’ Wayne and Drake picked up the rebound with a remix. As Jay-Z’s original addresses plenty of the world surrounding himself recently (Super Bowl goals / My wife in the crib feeding the kids liquid gold… Nobody wins when the family feuds / But my stash can’t fit into Steve Harvey’s suit), Lil’ Wayne and Drake drop verses that are relevant to anyone keeping tabs on them.

For Drake’s lines, he addresses the situation surrounding Meek Mill. The two rappers had an infamous squabble back in 2015, when Mill accused Drake of using ghostwriters for his songs, which Drake shot back at by claiming Mill was just riding the coattails of Nicki Minaj, who he was dating and touring with at the time. That ax has since been buried for greater issues.

Over the course of 2017, Meek Mill got into an altercation at a St Louis airport and on a separate occasion popped a few wheelies on a dirtbike. The two may seem unrelated, but a Philadelphia judge decided that the two incidents qualified as breaking parole. Those parole conditions were given to Mill back in 2008 over gun and drug possession charges. Now Meek Mill faces four to five years in jail, and much of the hip-hop community have expressed their outrage.

“We gon’ have to break the billi’ curse / I need my paper long like “A Milli” verse,” raps Drake, “Or too long like a sentence from a Philly judge / Fuck is the point in all the beefin’ when we really blood? / Nobody wins when the family feuds.”

Wayne, however, addresses a feud he isn’t about to drop. In his lines on Family Feud, he chirps Birdman, his once-frequent collaborator. The relationship soured in 2014 over business disagreements. These altercations delayed Wayne’s studio albums, and he hasn’t released once since Free Weezy in 2015.

“I flipped the bird at the Bird, hey / What’s for dinner? Popeyes,” raps Wayne, “These chickens got bird flu / And they chirp, chirp too / Always sung, never flew / These boys hot girls too.”

The track appears on a new version of Wayne’s latest mixtape, Dedication 6, which originally released without Feud.

70 young people arrested at a lingerie party over one ounce of weed

LingerieParty 800x400 70 young people arrested at a lingerie party over one ounce of weed

As skewed as the American policing system can be, cops in Bartow County, Georgia took things into the realm of the absurd last weekend. Around 2:00 AM in Carterville, a town 40 miles outside of Atlanta by car, police responded to reports of gunshots in a residential neighborhood. No gun violence was discovered. Some residents believe it may have just been fireworks, which adds up, because what police actually discovered was a nearby “Christmas lingerie/ pajama party,” which they proceeded to raid.

Police found only an ounce of weed on the premises. They asked who the drugs belonged to and no one took ownership. Behaving less like a responsible arm of the law and more like an exhausted parent trying to figure which kid put the mail in the sink, the officers decided to arrest every partygoer on site. Around 70 people in all.

Possession remains the only charge, and around six of these kids remain in custody, despite their bonds being paid for. The majority of arrested partygoers were young people of color.

“We just want our babies,” said Moneshia Fezzia, a mother waiting for her kid’s release, “we’re done, we’re tired. This is my second trip up here, and nobody’s telling me nothing except for ‘pending investigation.’”

The owner of the home admitted to police that they had rented out the property on Airbnb to Deja Heard for her 21st birthday. Heard handed out flyers ahead of the event, which probably explains how the rental house became a yuletide rager. “I thought they were just going to shut the party down and everyone was going to go home,” Heard told local news. “I’m very sorry it happened, all of us are innocent, it’s just not right.”

According to local news reports, some of the arrested individuals have already lost their jobs. Some of the arrested individuals had come in from Atlanta. Back in the city, council voted unanimously to lessen the punishment for drug possession. If they had they been caught in Atlanta, they would have only had to pay a $75 fine.

A magician tries to sell a cop weed and then makes it disappear

Magician Cop Weed 1 of 1 800x400 A magician tries to sell a cop weed and then makes it disappear

Would you go up to a cop and try to sell him weed? One crazy magician did.

Calen Morelli is an up-close street magician bringing the art of sleight of hand back into the limelight. Back in 2014, he released this video of himself asking a cop if he wanted to buy some weed. Obviously, the cop in the video wanted to get a hold of him instead and slammed him up against the wall. And the cop does this even after the weed magically vanishes.

This video instantly went viral, with over 8 million people watching it within a four-day span. It caused so much controversy that TMZ managed to secure an interview with Calen Morelli to ask him about it. Then, everyone found out the real trick… the cop was fake.

Mind you, Morelli states that neither the cop actor nor the cameraman helped with the trick. Morelli made the weed disappear on his own.

Why did he make the skit? Those same issues rolling around in all our minds after watching the news these days. Morelli wanted to bring attention to cannabis legalization, police violence, and civil rights in a way that only a magician could. Unfortunately, it seems that three years later, his whimsical commentary is just as necessary.
